1926 Carter the Great, Magician, Original Lithographed Poster Salesman Samples

Carter the Great (1874 -1936) was Charles Joseph Carter. Practicing stage magician during magic's golden age (1920's). This is an original four page color lithographed booklet printed in 1926 on heavy paper stock (not as thick as card stock).

As I was told it was given to theater managers prior to Carter's appearance to provide them with poster advertising options. Sort of an illustrated sales sheet for choosing a specific poster. It was included when I purchased an original Carter one sheet.

It was part of a huge hoard of Carter's magic material discovered in the 1960's behind a false wall in an old, imported automobile warehouse. The colors are somewhat deeper and more vivid than the scanner was able to capture. It includes the following poster samples.

  • Priestess of Delphi - large Carter portrait in magician's garb. Shows She-demon, Levitation Mystery, & The Elongated maiden
  • Cheating the Gallows - unbelievable image of a hanged corpse with Carter's soul escaping. Onlookers feel cheated.
  • The Vanishing Elephant -  depicts elephant on raised platform. Infers that elephant is whisked away into thin air.
  • Shooting A Marked Bullet - Carter gazes into orb with demon. Illusions around perimeter. Devil looks on.
  • Spirit Cabinet - shows Carter standing alongside disassembled cabinet. Devil, demons, and skeleton look on.
  • World's Weird Wonderful Wizard - shows great magicians of the past with a large demon devil in the center.
