1929 Hustler Toy Corp., “Sambo Hustler” Animated Pull Toy

1929 Hustler Toy Corp., “Sambo Hustler” Animated Pull Toy

Here’s an 83 year old painted wooden pull toy and it’s absolutely perfect, unused, in mint condition. Definitely the best condition wooden toy from the late 1920’s I’ve seen. Purchased from a Wisconsin collection where it resided since new.

The toy itself is rare, but the condition for it may be unique.

It’s complete right down to the original cloth pull cord with wooden bead. Nothing has been repainted or repaired. It has 99% + of its original Hustler decal.

Called the “Sambo Hustler” I actually located its original advertisement from the 1929 Sears Roebuck Catalog.

“When toy is pulled Sambo moves his arms up and down and horse’s head bobs backward and forward. He seems to be in an awful hurry to go some place. Toy is made of wood, with metal mechanism, wood parts, finished in bright color. Donkey has artificial leather ears. Complete with pull cord. 89¢“

Size: 5¾” tall. 11” long.

Condition:

Factory mint condition with all original paint and parts. Donkey’s ears have never been rotated up into place. Cloth reins and pull string are original to the toy. Not a single nick, scratch, gouge, chip, wear, or anything else. However, just to be super critical the front wheels have discontinuous rim wear about the width of hair, and the decal is missing a teensy nick on the bottom edge. A perfect example for museum display.
