1953 Chein, No.340 Playland Whip in Original Box

1953 Chein, No.340 Playland Whip in Original Box

Fantastic example from J. Chein & Co. of their scarce clockwork, tin litho, Playland Whip. This rather large amusement park ride works beautifully using the original elastic belt and comes complete with its super scarce original box.

Realistically designed toy features 4 dodge-em style cars. They jiggle clockwise around the oval track while their driver's spring mounted head bobs side to side. Interestingly this was the first U.S. produced toy which automatcially changed its own rate of speed. Faithful to the actual ride it slows down on straight-aways and rapidly speeds up around the corners. Two sets of six different amusement park scenes lithoed around the center oval add to the realism.

Original box includes a simple yellow and blue illustration of the toy in action on both sides. The catalog number, toy name, and company name and address were also printed onto the flaps and sides.
