c.1955 Wolverine, Airplane Carrier in Original Box

c.1955 Wolverine, Airplane Carrier in Original Box

Wolverine must've produced a "trillion" of these pressed steel airplane carriers, but this is the first one I've seen that's still complete with all five its original plastic warplanes attached to the original header card. The toy also comes with its original box, albeit in fair condition.

Aircraft carrier (called Airplane Carrier on the box) consisted of a hull with a lithographed flat deck. A raised gun deck and stack were attached to one side.

Simple toy; all it was made to do was float....and then rust. In addition the hollow hull was easily dented. So although many of these were produced, few have survived in unused condition as this one is. The neatest part of the toy were the five planes. If the ship was floating around in your bathtub you had have something land on it. The planes are fragile and have very small parts. I doubt they'd last very long. The header card with original elastic string had an even shorter life. It was tossed as soon as the planes were removed.

The planes consist of a C-69 Transport, DC-6, DC-3, XF-89 Jet, and Navion single engle.

The box features a three color illustration of planes landing and taking off. The name of the toy and manufacturer are repeated on the side flaps. The bottom is blank. Both endflaps have been replaced.
