1962 Marx, The Mighty Kong in Original Box

1962 Marx, The Mighty Kong in Original Box

Scarce battery operated toy from the original owners. Perfect mint in box condition with all actions working beautifully. Recent attic find never played with or removed from original box. The tethered wiring from the remote control was still factory wrapped in place around the body.

From the estate of an elderly Indiana couple who had acquired it for their grandchildren to play with whenever they were visiting. And like so many others (from a collection I purchased) it was stored and forgotten until recently.

My research revealed that the scarcity of the toy was due to it never being licensed by the Marx company. It was advertised in the 1962 Sears-Roebuck catalog as only "battery operated gorilla" and was available for only one year.

The toy has several actions which includes forward walking, beating chest with moving arms, and loud growling. It has a flocked fur body over a metal shell. The hands, feet, and chest are some type of plastic; probably polystyrene. The fasce is more flexible and may be a rubber material or an alternate plastic. The mouth, tongue, and teeth are hand painted. The eyes are glass. It has steel bands around the neck and wrists with a connecting metal linked chain. It has its original Marx cloth tag on the back.

It operates using its original 2-button tethered remote control. The original paper insert for battery placement is still inside the controller.

It comes in its original full color illustrated box which shows Kong knocking over buildings, squishing cars, jets attacking; in other words your average general monster mayhem. The side panels show Kong fighting Tyrannasourus Rex on Skull Island. The front and rear panels show a different Kong holding a small child and looking a lot less ferocious. It comes with all four original inserts; one covers the head, one for each leg, and a trestle-type insert which holds the body in place.
