c.1932 Chein Mechanical Walking Chicken In Original Box
One of Chein's earliest Easter toys is this heavy gauge tinplate Mechanical Walking Chicken. Looks more like a chick to me. Toy works great and comes complete with its original box. The key, although probably not original to the toy, is from the same time period. Intense, but basic looking chick winds with separate key. Spring wound motor makes the chick bend downwards and then up again giving it the impression of pecking. This up and down motion causes the bird to vibrate over the floor. Overall very realistic toy. Orange colored webbed feet are probably steel litho. Today the simple motion of this toy shouldn't be overlooked by the quality and creativity that went into its manufacture over 75 years ago. The original box features a full panel illustration of a young chick on both sides. The toy name, manufacturer, address, and catalog number were printed on the side panels and endflaps. It's complete with all six original endflaps. Although the bird turns up occasionally the box is difficult to find. Size: 4½" long and 4½" tall. Date Sold: Sept. 2009
