c.1904 Lehmann, "New Century Cycle"

c.1904 Lehmann,

Neat 3-wheel clockwork tin litho wind-up "New Century Cycle" manufactured by Lehmann. It's one of those peculiar vehicles representing the "new" era of mass produced bicycles from the late 19th century.

Once wound it moves forward with the gentleman in gray raising and lowering his right arm. Simultaneously, his rear seated companion rotates the red and white striped umbrella. Beautifully designed 3-dimensional figures on triangular bicycle is an excellent example of the quality built into all Lehmann toys. It's also fairly scarce.

Regarding the actual toy; the body is dark metallic blue wash, flooring is yellow (darkened with age), seats, wheel rims and spokes are brass plated. Tires are painted white (also darkened from age). Top center of the umbrella is marked with Lehmann trademark. The steel rod tiller fits into one of three holes to move forward in a straight line, to the right, or to the left. Best of all it works great.
