1936 Marx, M10000 Red Zephyr Articulated Streamlined Locomotive Set in Original Box
Fantastic three piece clockwork train set accurately designed after the historically important, streamlined art deco diesel Locomotive M10000. Scarce set was originally purchased as part of the Marx warehouse liquidation on September 17, 1977. As provenance it comes complete with its original bill of sale, auction receipt, and auction notice. It also includes the original track, original box, instructions, inspection tag, inserts, and accessory sales flyer. Lastly, it also includes a coined aluminum medal in original packing which was added only to sets manufactured in 1934. The M10000 was historically important in that it was the first train to represent the pure art deco concept of speed and function. Streamlined to look like a speeding bullet, the set consists of three matching interlocking tin litho cars. This particular model was labeled "Union Pacific" and included the M10000 diesel railway and post office locomotive, a 657 coach car, and a 658 Coach Buffet with twin bulls-eye rear (black dot) markers. Each car has a maroon top, maroon lower sides, silver sides, windows, and locomotive front details which are all highlighted in black. Each has four rotating chrome plated metal wheels. The locomotive's power wheels are die cast metal. The loco also has a dummy headlight, a removable side wind-up key, , a ringing bell, and start/stop switch on the roof. Each car links together using a brass pin which are still in place. The set also includes 14ft. of super clean track (four straights, 10 curves). It also has its original (and correct) Streamlined Union Pacific Box with all inserts. It also has an original sales flyer for additional Marx accessories including signals and lighting, plus its original inspection packing slip. Most wonderful of all it includes an aluminum medallion made of the exact same metal as the real M10000 locomotive. The medal was available only during the first year (1934) that Marx manufactured the M10000. It somehow found its way into this set. The medal is still wrapped in its original paper packing. Finally, as part of the Marx liquidation sale held by Ted Maurer, Pottstown, PA, included with the set is its bill of sale, auction sales receipt and the original auction notice. They all attest to the originality of the toy. It's never been played with or publicly sold at retail. Size: 28" when linked. Sold: Sep. 2006
