1932 Chein, Popeye (Overhead) Bag Puncher in Original Box

1932 Chein, Popeye (Overhead) Bag Puncher in Original Box

Magnificent example of one of the earliest Popeye toys ever produced. This is Chein's No. 256 Popeye (Overhead) Bag Puncher. It's complete with all original parts (including the bag) and in fantastic working condition. It also comes with its incredibly rare box. It's complete and entirely original. Both the toy and box grade as the highest condition I've seen.

This lithographed tinplate toy features a mechanical Popeye striking a suspended celluloid punching bag. The bag hangs from the ceiling of an art deco style platform which prominently displays comic characters drawn by the original artist E.C. Segar around the base.

It winds using a separate key which is included. BUT best of all the toy works flawlessly!

The box was printed with two large panel, 3-color, Popeye comic illustrations drawn by Segar. The two opposite panels spell out "Popeye" in large red letters and include Mr. Segar's famous smoking cigar signature. A simpler Popeye drawing was printed on both endflaps along with the manufacturers name, toy name, catalog number, and licensed trademark.

Size: 9½" x 4¼" square.
